A 3D replica of the Okotoks Erratic or "Big Rock" has been produced. The Blackfoot First Nation used the Erratic as a navigational landmark to find a crossing point over the Sheep River where the town of Okotoks is located today, well before European settlers arrived in the area. The town's name, Okotoks, originates from "o'kotok" [ˈokətok], meaning "rock" in Blackfoot language, and may be referencing the rock itself. The Erratic also features pictographs (rock art created using pigments) and was considered a medicine rock by local Indigenous people. In the 1970s, the government designated it as a Provincial Historic Site to safeguard its geological and cultural significance. James Hector, a geologist with the Palliser Expedition, documented the rock in 1863, marking him as the first European to do so. The Erratic was captured using a Phantom 4 Drone and a 3D model of it was created using Pix4Dmapper software.
