An API-standard oil-water separator is a device specifically engineered for removing significant quantities of crude oil and suspended particles from industrial wastewaters generated in refineries, petrochemical plants, chemical facilities, natural gas processing sites, as well as other oily water sources. The name stems from its design based on guidelines set forth by the American Petroleum Institute (API).
