Oil Filter Magnet Holder

Do you need an oil filter magnet for a 68mm (2.688") filter? Have you priced the commercially available versions? If so, you might be willing to lower your standards a bit and consider using this handy little object that just needs some magnets and will slap satisfyingly onto your the oil filter of your favorite jalopy.

In theory, this helps keep the little metal particles that might be entrained in your oil attached to the inside of the metal oil filter housing and out of the clean oil flow. I say in theory because I think this probably isn't as much a problem for a lot of modern vehicles, but in an old Mini with a haphazardly rebuilt motor I actually think if there wasn't some metal in the oil I'd be a little concerned.

This uses some readily available 60 x 10 x 3 mm neodymium bar magnets; mine were "DIYMAG" brand. Stack two of those together then slide them in the handy slot. Your tolerances may vary.

You can then install this on your oil filter and imagine it making your engine the modern, friction-less utopia you wish it would be.

Full disclosure: I have not long-term tested this to find out whether the PETG will handle the engine bay temps. So either this is going to be awesome or an awesome mess.

Update #1: as requested by absolutely no one, I made a five magnet version of this. Because 5 is clearly better than 4. What was I even thinking?

Performance Update: having now driven the Mini around a few times and for a good amount of time I'm please to say that there's been no deformation to the PETG material. I suspect that ABS might be more suitable in this scenario, but I don't think PETG is the worst choice either.

Print instructions

This was optimized and sliced for Prusament PETG.

It doesn't need any supports, but I did use a brim to keep the base firmly planted.
