An oil skimmer is a device that effectively separates liquid from solid particles floating on it or from another liquid, such as water. It finds wide usage for removing oil atop water bodies during oil spills, but also plays an integral role in numerous industrial applications. These include cleaning machine tool coolants and purifying solutions in aqueous parts washers. The technology proved extremely useful in tackling the aftermath of the notorious 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill.
