Off Road, 4wd (or 6wd) RC Car
thingiverse
This is a robust, high load carrying off road RC chassis designed to conquer rough terrain and climb extremely steep inclines. Its fully independent suspension ensures stable performance, while one motor at each wheel delivers efficient power distribution. Check out its 4wd version here: https://youtu.be/a39qIS8JGv4 and witness its rock crawling prowess in action here: https://youtu.be/-LaEoF4j1Rk. Additionally, explore the FPV camera capabilities with the Tank upgrade here: https://youtu.be/4jV0W-KFchE. Plans and mounts for a 6wd version are included. Please note that if you choose to build this configuration, you'll need to space the axles closer together due to its skid steer design, which works better with squarish vehicles. This chassis also features transversely mounted electronics, utilizing an Aluminium tube for the chassis rail to minimize weight. To further enhance customization, I've included Rhino files allowing you to easily modify it according to your needs. Instructions: CONTROL ARMS/WISHBONES: You will need some 5-6.5mm aluminium rods (drill holes to accommodate available options). Smaller sizes are preferred. RC: Using a basic approach, I employed the cheapest components possible and paired motor speed controllers in parallel, connecting left side motors to one and right side motors to another. A unique control method is implemented using the RC controller's stick inputs: Top left = forward Bottom right = backward Left bottom = spin left Right bottom = spin right All intermediate settings produce varying levels of turning while moving forward or backward Alternative control options include using an Arduino, like in our off road SLAM robot. This chassis boasts some advantages but would require modifications to LIDAR carriers. MOTORS: I employed Dagu Wild Thumper motors (6V) with wheels and mounts, featuring 34:1 Metal Gearmotor 25Dx52L mm High Power Code: MEC-30089, offering 4.3 kg-cm and 5.5 A stall capability Tighten the screws securing the gearbox to the motor using loctite to prevent loosening. Some motors arrive from the factory with loose screws. MOUNTS FOR MOTORS: Pololu 25D mm Metal Gearmotor Bracket (supplied in pairs) can be utilized, ensuring alignment with pre-printed motor carriers. BATTERY: A 3300 mAh NiMH 7.2V battery was chosen; for a 6wd version, consider upgrading to a higher capacity LiPo. SPRINGS: Two #157000003/22497 1/10 Model Car 85mm Adjustable Aluminum Shock absorbers were selected. SPEED CONTROLLER: 2x HobbyKing X-Car 45A Brushed Car ESC (model #9261000018/32025) with similar specs can be used, given the chassis' skid steer configuration, which results in frequent loading of the motors.
