Oedipus and Phorbas at The Louvre, Paris
cults3d
The monumental marble masterpiece showcases a pivotal moment from ancient mythology: Phorbas springs into action to free infant Oedipus from his deathly fate, literally saving him from the tree where he was abandoned to avoid fulfilling the ominous prophecy foretelling his father's demise. Crafted with precision and care, this life-size sculpture was entrusted to the esteemed Ecole Superieur d'Art et Sculpture on June 19th, 1789, before making its way to the Museum of French Monuments in March 1808. It remained there until it was carefully relocated by Leon de Laborde, curator of sculpture at the museum, who placed it within the Louvre's hallowed halls in 1851.
