Discovered in marine sediments in Peru, this cetacean belonged to the family Odontoceti, which includes dolphins and sperm whales. Odobenocetops had unique adaptations, including specialized teeth, suggesting a diet focused on hunting fish and other marine prey. Its name "Odobenocetops" refers to its resemblance to modern walruses (Odobenus), despite not being closely related. The discovery of Odobenocetops peruvianus has contributed significant information to our understanding of marine mammal diversity and evolution in the prehistoric seas.
