Odin stone
sketchfab
Upper section of an Anglo-Scandinavian cross shaft. The front side of the cross shaft features panels divided by intricate interlace, showing a man clad in a cap and flared smock with a bird perched on each shoulder. This depiction may represent Odin and his ravens, who informed him about global events. Odin was considered the most powerful Norse deity, with the ravens serving as his messengers. Another possible interpretation suggests that the birds are doves and the man is a portrait of the deceased individual. This carving showcases exceptional craftsmanship, ranking among the finest works of the Brompton school in North Yorkshire. The cross is crafted from high-quality, well-sorted deltaic sandstone with micaceous grains, displaying a light yellowish brown coloration. The source of this material likely originated in County Durham. Dating back to the early half of the 10th century.
