King John's Castle - Odiham Located near Odiham in Hampshire, England, King John's Castle was constructed between 1207 and 1214 by the monarch himself. This impressive fortress is one of only three built by King John during his reign, showcasing his strategic prowess as a ruler. The site, situated on a bend in the River Whitewater, offers a unique advantage due to its proximity to two royal strongholds: Winchester and Windsor, approximately a day's ride from each. The castle features an imposing three-story octagonal keep, primarily constructed from local flint, which is surrounded by a square moat. Historians believe that King John departed from this site on his way to Runnymede to sign the Magna Carta in 1215. Unfortunately, the castle's strategic location made it a prime target for invaders, and it was besieged and captured by French forces in 1216. Despite its tumultuous past, King John's Castle played host to Parliament at least once in 1303 and served as a prison for David II of Scotland following his capture at Neville's Cross in 1346. By the 15th century, the castle had fallen into disuse and was transformed into a hunting lodge. However, by 1605, it was described as a ruin, a testament to its decline.
