Oculus Quest 2 (and Quest 1**) Controller Cover Protectors
thingiverse
**This was designed for Quest 2 (the headset I own), but one user has reported successful functionality with Quest 1. Latest: I've been using the bulky versions for a few weeks with great results. Maybe better than the original design. I still haven't thoroughly tested the larger hole version myself. I also just added Fusion360 files in case people want to remix. Current Work: People have expressed interest in a few ideas. I'll probably work on them in no particular order (I tend to shuffle from one thing to another, especially when I hit a temporary roadblock). - PLA snap-on version - CURRENTLY BEING DESIGNED - A grip that may be separate or combined with this cover - PLANNED. Protective/decorative covers for your Oculus Quest 2 controllers! The holes allow proper tracking of the IR LEDs. Designed to be printed in TPU and slipped directly onto the controller. Three versions: (1) Original - Minimal with small holes. Functions well in nearly all circumstances, though tracking loss has been reported with games where the controller is brought close to the headset (shooters like Onward). I used these happily for several weeks, playing mainly Beat Saber, Eleven Table Tennis, Walkabout Mini Golf, and Echo. (2) Larger Holes - Minimal with enlarged holes for improved tracking. Needs more time for evaluation, but will hopefully improve the close-to-headset tracking loss. (3) Bulky - Increased size for maximum protection. I am currently using this version with no issues. I just started playing Population One, and I didn't notice tracking loss even with the controller close to the headset. Any reports on performance impacts are appreciated! I can do testing myself, but more data is better! I will be posting an associated Youtube video soon. HISTORY 04/10/2021: I've been using the bulky versions for a few weeks with great results. Maybe better than the original design. I still haven't thoroughly tested the larger hole version myself. I also just added Fusion360 files in case people want to remix. 03/28/2021: Minor change to version with larger holes. I have been using the bulky version without any issues. I just started playing Population One, and I didn't notice tracking loss even with the controller close to the headset. 03/26/2021: I finally got the bulky version to print properly. I was originally printing the perimeters at 40mm/s, and 20mm/s didn't seem to help much, but 10mm/s (and possibly slightly cooler nozzle temp) fixed it. I printed at 10mm/s perimeters, 50% external perimeter, and 20mm/s infill. I will update the pictures later tonight. I have not tried the version with larger holes for improved tracking. 03/23/2021: I uploaded the bulky versions - both left and right. I am having curling issues on the edges of overhangs, and I am currently working on perfecting my own print settings. Playing with an imperfect print, it still seems functional. 03/12/2021: I printed and tested the second preliminary design for the bulky version. It functioned quite well, but I want to make some printability changes (increase thickness around holes) and usability changes (adjust thickness near index finger). I also want to bulk up the top and bottom a tiny bit. 03/10/2021: Second preliminary design for thicker version uploaded. 03/09/2021: I uploaded a preliminary design of the thicker version. I have not printed and tested this design yet as it still requires some work. 02/06/2021: I changed the holes a tiny bit more. I think they are good enough. I played through a few Beat Saber songs including Expert+ and didn't miss any notes that I could blame on tracking loss. I also extended the bottom a bit. 02/03/2021: I changed the positions of the holes a bit. They're *almost* perfect. I expect to have them done in the next few days. I also added a "seamless" version without a crack down the side (which was included to give a clean place for the extruder to stop and start). I'll make aesthetic changes later after perfecting the holes. The STEP files should be scaled appropriately now, too. 02/02/2021: I tested both sides together with a good amount of success. During Beat Saber, I had a few instances where my blade floated away from me, but it returned quickly enough to not fail the songs (at Expert difficulty level). I played a bit of Echo and didn't notice any issues. Unlike the previous version, this one worked well enough that I am fine with leaving the covers on, but I will likely take another look at hole alignment and make tiny adjustments. I will also adjust the print so it stays more rigidly in place. I definitely moved the cover at some point while adjusting my headset or something, and that caused tracking loss. 02/01/2021: I adjusted the positions of several of the holes. I only had time to print and test the left side, but the results were much better. The files have been updated. 01/31/2021 (later the same day): I just attempted a more strenuous Beat Saber song and the tracking started glitching out about halfway through. It lost tracking enough to totally fail the song on multiple occasions, so I ended up removing the covers. I am going to refine the design this week and see if I can improve the performance. I know there are a few LEDs that could use better alignment... 01/31/2021: I have printed and tested these covers, but not extensively yet. I may make minor changes to hole positions if issues arise. I may also make minor changes for aesthetics. Please report problems so I can make changes.
