Here is a unique and innovative approach to create three-dimensional printed models of one of nature's most fascinating creatures - the humble octopus. With the ability to change shape and color, adapt to new situations, and demonstrate a level of intelligence previously unknown in animals, these marine invertebrates have long fascinated humans. The Octo-3D printer project involves 3D printing a large scale replica of an actual octopus. This was accomplished by collecting and examining over three hundred hours worth of photographs taken of real live specimens using time-lapse cameras installed around their aquariums. To produce these remarkable replicas, the team designed custom print heads capable of handling a vast range of filament materials that can simulate different shades of blue to closely replicate the unique mottling found on an actual octopus. The printed replica's flexible shape could change when water flows through its arms and changes as well to perfectly match what would have happened if this creature had actually moved like that.
