Octopurse

When designing the Octopurse, buoyancy played a key role, so I enlarged the base to maximize its floating potential and hollowed out the internal body for added buoyancy. To accommodate coins, I inserted a canister inside the octopus to contain their mass. The legs of the octopus are detachable from the main body because printing the entire design in one piece would have been extremely challenging. The holes on the side of the octopus allowed me to insert the legs. I chose an octopus design to associate it with water. Using 3D CAD software, I created the model. This is my first upload to Thingiverse. The lid is removable, enabling easy insertion of coins into the Octopurse. After designing the model, I 3D printed it to test its functionality. Printing the legs separately from the main body was necessary because my 3D printer generated excessive support material, and the full model wouldn't fit on the printer bed. By making the main body as large as possible, I increased its capacity to hold more coins, and printing the legs separately proved beneficial. To simplify insertion of the legs into the main body, I added chamfers to their ends. When 3D printing the Octopurse, it's best to lay the legs flat to achieve optimal quality and detail. A shell thickness of 1.6 mm strikes a balance between structural integrity and lightweight design. Setting the 3D printer speed to 50 mm per second worked well for me. In Test One, the Octopurse held a total weight of 800 grams of coins. To enhance its capacity, I revisited the design and incorporated two floats on either side of the octopus, which resemble toxic oil drums. These added buoyancy significantly. Test Two revealed that the Octopurse could hold an impressive 1.218 kilograms of coins without sinking, and the barrels helped balance the design.
