Octagonal Roll Out Toolbox

Octagonal Roll Out Toolbox

This is my first version of a fully 3D printable Octagonal Roll-Out Toolbox. I originally saw the concept on an episode of Paskmakes scrap wood challenge in late 2020. I loved the idea so much that I had to try and make it a reality using the tools on my own work bench. Everything in this build is designed in Blender to be 3D printed, right down to the flexible straps and hinges.

I printed this on a stock Prusa i3 MK3S using Overture Red 92A TPU for the Straps, Polymaker grey PETG for the caddies, and Azurefilm3d transparent red PETG for the central tool box. The pins and hinges are in a generic white PETG.

Note: The hinges print in 2 parts and assemble in two orientations (see pics). 2 should be in the Flat orientation and 2 should be in Inverted orientation. The “Flat” hinges go connect the lid of the tool box to the bottom. the “Inverted” hinges connect Caddy 1 to the bottom of the tool box.

3MFs are available and include some handy printing aids to help prevent warping on such large pieces.

Future versions of this design will focus on efficiency with some minor alignment corrections. This version is fully functional came in around 180 hours and 3.5kg in PETG and TPU filament.

Update Mar. 12 - 2020:

Removed unnecessary STL for the hinges.

There is a “path” noticeable on the outside of the caddies. This is in place to indicate where the straps should go and help with alignment.
