Obsidian is a dark-colored volcanic glass formed when lava cools rapidly on contact with air or water. This process creates a smooth, glossy surface with a conchoidal fracture pattern, which means it breaks in a curved shape like the inside of a shell. Obsidian has been used for thousands of years as a material for making tools, weapons, and decorative objects due to its sharpness and durability.
