A thousand years before the Doom of Valyria, three black and one green glass candles were brought to the Citadel from Valyria. These twisted, sharp-edged glass candles give off an intensely bright light that distorts colors in bizarre ways (white becomes as radiant as freshly fallen snow, yellow shines like gold, reds turn into flames, and shadows become so dark they appear as gaping holes in the world).
