It depicts a biblical scene – Jacob, who in his sleep saw a ladder reaching the sky, up and down which angels were going and coming. On its top Jacob saw God. The ladder motive is interpreted in Christianity as the path to perfection, to God. Furthermore, Jesus can be associated with the ladder that reduces the distance between Heaven and Earth.
