Object of Constant Width

Object of Constant Width

thingiverse

This shape, based on a Reuleaux triangle, boasts an equal diameter, allowing it to roll smoothly between two flat surfaces much like a sphere, despite its unique appearance. The concept of constant width in 2D has been extended to 3D, enabling this solid to mimic the rolling properties of a sphere. What's fascinating about this shape is that you wouldn't expect anything other than a perfect sphere to behave in such a way, but the mathematical properties of Reuleaux triangles make it possible for this unusual form to function like one. To print and assemble this model effectively, I've broken it down into multiple parts, ensuring that once complete, all components will work seamlessly together. When connecting the two large pieces via pins (located on the bottom), a slight sanding is necessary to achieve a precise fit between them. This minor adjustment yields a remarkably tight connection, making the entire assembly incredibly effective.
