An obelisk is a tall, four-sided, narrow tapering monument that ends in a pyramid-like shape or pyramidion at the top. Originally called tekhenu by the Ancient Egyptians, they were made monolithic and are now often constructed from several stones. These structures symbolized the sun god Ra and were replicated extensively by the Romans, with more obelisks standing in Rome than in Egypt. Notable examples include the 25-meter (82 ft) obelisk at Saint Peter's Square in Rome weighing 331 metric tons, and the one in front of the church of Trinità dei Monti at the head of the Spanish Steps.
