OB1.4 with 380x380x380 print envelope
thingiverse
This is an impressive build of the OpenBuilds OB1.4 with a larger build envelope of approximately 380x380x380mm, utilizing half of a 1m open-beam length for the base and maintaining the original diameter rods and placement but increasing their lengths. The front Y-axis GT2 pulley was replaced with a larger one from SDP-SI.com (6Z51M036DF0605) to clear the open-beam rail, as it has 36 teeth. A 3-meter GT2 belt was also required due to the larger build envelope, using SDP-SI.com part number 6R51MC060. A lazy Susan bearing was employed for the filament feed. There were initial issues with a granite tile 12" x 12" base, which cracked at 70°C, so it has been replaced by a 0.25" x 15" x 15" T6061 aluminum plate on top of a 0.375" x 15" x 15" plywood connected directly to the standard OB1.4 Y-carriage. Printing continues using blue painter's tape, applied directly to the aluminum plate. A dial indicator attachment ensures that the aluminum plate is level to +/-0.010" over its surface, easily adjustable using the provided spring setup. The printer uses a zip tie to secure the electronics and power supply to the OB1.4 frame for easy movement as a unit. The long LCD cable configuration was used without issues. RepetierHost in Ubuntu 12.04 Linux is preferred, along with Slic3r, which comes with RepetierHost. Initially, there were global Z-height issues on printed parts around 12mm, which were resolved by turning on the ping-pong communication in RepetierHost to ensure proper waiting for Marlin software commands. The printer now works very well at 50mm/sec print speeds, and further finer calibration may increase speed even more. Thanks again to Wired1, Hossman, and Nate for their help throughout the build process.
