OB1.4 open beam 3D printer
thingiverse
Introducing my second printer design, an enhanced version of the OB1 with a redesigned top end dubbed 1.4. This printer boasts increased build volume (200mm x 200mm x 200mm) and open front design, making it fully compatible with existing RepRap printers. The new 1.4 designation comes from the side frames resembling the number '4'. It's worth mentioning that if you've built the OB1, you can reuse much of its plastic parts and extrusions, although some will require shortening. Currently, the x-axis carriage and ends are work in progress. The printer doesn't need specialist parts, laser cutting, or CNC machinery for construction. There's a possibility of designing a standard x-carriage to accommodate a Wades type extruder. The x-axis rails feature 55mm spacing and 8mm diameter linear rods. Comprehensive assembly instructions are available on YouTube (Parts 1-4), while build trays can be downloaded from Thingiverse. A complete bill of materials is provided in both Excel and tab-delimited formats within the file list. Required extrusions include a top rail (420mm), eight front/rear/side, upright rails (330mm each), and two diagonal rails (297mm each). You'll also need linear rods for the x-, y-, and z-axes, LM10UU and LM8UU bearings, M3 machine screws, washers, nuts, a 5mm aluminum plate for the y-carriage, bed adjusters, and an extruder (small footprint recommended). Remember, build trays from Thingiverse include pusher and extruder parts, as well as the y-carriage. Happy printing!
