Oak Panel Annunciation with Angel, Edzell Castle
sketchfab
Depicting the Annunciation with an angel, this is one of eight wall panels that beautifully adorned the Great Hall of Edzell Castle. Their early date, confirmed by tree ring dating, falls between 1530s and 1540s, making these examples extremely rare. Iconography of this kind was often destroyed during the Scottish Reformation in the 1560s, but fortunately, these survived. Making a groundbreaking discovery, Andrew Jervise, a local historian, found them in a workshop in the 1850s. He gifted the panels to Lord Panmure, who later donated them to a predecessor of Historic Scotland in 1938 for display at the Castle.
