How can everyday life for wheelchair users be made easier and more enjoyable? A team of wheelchair users, technicians, and designers collaborated on a need analysis, idea development, prototyping, and testing to find solutions for wheelchair accessories. Not only was usability considered, but also the aesthetic appeal: "We want the wheelchair to look modern and cool, not like outdated medical equipment," says Raul Krauthausen, a project participant. The lighting system open°lights is one of our designs that we developed and refined through multiple testing rounds. There are two common shapes called I and O. The I shape is used for front lights and floor lights, while the O shape is used for backlighting. The interface of the lights is easy to use.\r\n\r\nWith the help of open-source instructions and maker technologies in Fab Labs, our products can be built and customized by users themselves. To get started, download the Thing Files and open the Open Lights DIY Manual.\r\n\r\nThe "Made for My Wheelchair" project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. Project partners include Makea Industries GmbH, beable e.V., Otto Bock Mobility Solutions GmbH, and Sozialhelden e.V..\r\n\r\nVisit http://www.madeformywheelchair.de/ to learn more about the project.
