The daily life of wheelchair users can be significantly improved with innovative solutions designed by a team consisting of wheelchair users, technicians, and designers. By conducting thorough need analysis, developing ideas, prototyping, and testing, this team has created add-ons for wheelchairs that cater to both usability and aesthetics. According to Raul Krauthausen, a project participant, "We aim to transform the wheelchair into a sleek and modern piece of equipment, rather than an outdated medical device." This vision is reflected in their design, open°lights, which has undergone multiple rounds of testing and refinement. The set consists of two primary shapes: the I shape for front lights and floor lighting, and the O shape for backlighting. The user-friendly interface makes it easy to operate these lights. Thanks to open-source instructions and maker technologies available in Fab Labs, users can build and customize their products using these tools. To get started, download the Thing Files and follow the DIY Manual provided with the Open Lights project. The "Made for my Wheelchair" project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and involves partnerships with Makea Industries GmbH, beable e.V., Otto Bock Mobility Solutions GmbH, and Sozialhelden e.V..
