The Holocaust Altar Represented Salvation The Holocaust altar represented the "Calvary", the path of salvation for the sinner. On the Holocaust altar the sinner had his sins expiated. This is an exact figure of Christ. The Lamb of God made Himself an offering to expiate all sin of humanity. He is "the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world" (John 1:29). So, our Lord bore, in our place, God's judgment on sin, making Himself sin for us (Isaiah 53:4,10; Zechariah 13:7; Matthew 26:39; 1 Timothy 2:5,6). What Was the Purpose of the Altar Let's start with the first topic - What was the purpose of the Holocaust altar? The Holocaust altar served to sacrifice offerings for God. Some sacrifices were for their own sins and others for the sins of the people. The purpose of the holocaust was that through it, people would be accepted and forgiven before God (Leviticus 1:4). For the holocaust, a male animal was sacrificed: a ram, a goat, a bull or a turtledove (or a pigeon) (Leviticus 1:13-17).
