The O'Brien Monument is built in honor of Major General Johann Freiherr von O'Brien. Constructed in 1909, it stands opposite Überfuhrstraße 15–17 on the northern edge of Aupark in Jedlesee, a district within Vienna's 21st district of Floridsdorf. Before the Battle of Aspern, French forces attempted to cross the Danube at Nußdorf and established an improvised bridgehead on the opposite bank near Schwarzlackenau (now Jedlesee). Led by O'Brien, they defeated the French on May 13, 1809, forcing Napoleon's troops to wait days before crossing the Danube at Aspern on May 20. This delay allowed the Austrian army to regroup and organize in an orderly manner. The unveiling of a memorial honoring the French fighting in Schwarzlackenau took place on June 17, 1909, commissioned by Jedlesee Beautification Association to commemorate the centenary of that event.
