Nuremberg was a German light cruiser, built for the Kriegsmarine, that belonged to the Leipzig class. The ship was named after the city of Nuremberg and had one sister ship called Leipzig. Nuremberg began taking shape on the dry dock in 1934, slid into the water in December of that year, and entered service in November 1935. She boasted a main battery consisting of nine powerful 15 cm (5.9 inch) guns mounted in three triple turrets, which allowed her to steam at speeds of up to 32 knots (59 km/h; 37 mph). Nuremberg holds the distinction of being the longest-serving major warship of the Kriegsmarine and the only one to engage in active service after World War II had come to an end, although not under German command.
