Nymphe Arethuse is a digital reproduction of a French masterpiece commissioned from Claude Poirier and Jean Hardy in 1706 to replace a lead casting made around 1705. The original statue was remade entirely in marble by Poirier alone between 1711 and was set as a matching piece for Jacques Prou's Amphitrite near the grounds of the Château de Marly, surrounded with artificial rocks and large lead birds. This sculpture group from Marly has been shown off in Cour Marly since 1933 where Nymphe Arethuse has joined her partner, an important French national treasure known as Amphitrite made by Jacques Prou. She was purchased thanks to a grant given by the AGF Company after Louvre Museum bought Amphitrite that same year.
