Nymph (Central Figure for 'The Three Graces') is a bronze sculpture by Aristide Maillol, crafted in 1930 and finally cast into solid form in 1953. It embodies the serenity characteristic of Ancient Roman sculptures depicting the Three Graces, much like the renowned work of Antonio Canova, also featured on Scan the World. In contrast to his contemporary August Rodin, Maillol's sculpture radiates a sense of calm. Aristide Joseph Bonaventure Maillol was a French sculptor, painter, and printmaker who focused nearly all his mature works on the female form with a classical emphasis on stable shapes. The figurative style of his large bronzes is seen as an essential precursor to Henry Moore's greater simplifications, while his serene classicism set a benchmark for European and American figure sculpture until World War II brought it to an end. Josep Pla noted about Maillol: "These archaic ideas, Greek, were the great novelty Maillol introduced into the trend of modern sculpture. What you need to love from the ancients is not antiquity itself but the sense of permanence and renewed novelty, which is due to nature and reason."
