Coronavirus Disease 2019, commonly referred to as COVID-19, is an infectious illness triggered by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, also known as SARS-CoV-2. The first reported case emerged in Wuhan, Hubei, China, back in December of 2019. This outbreak has led to a global pandemic that continues to spread rapidly across the globe. As of July 14th, 2020, more than 13 million cases have been confirmed worldwide, resulting in over 573 thousand deaths and nearly 7.3 million recoveries. Individuals who contract COVID-19 typically experience symptoms such as fever, cough, fatigue, shortness of breath, and a loss of taste and smell. In most instances, the illness results in mild symptoms; however, some patients may progress to acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) or develop other complications like multi-organ failure, septic shock, and blood clots. The time between exposure and symptom onset typically ranges from 2 to 14 days, with an average of around five days. The virus primarily spreads through close contact between individuals, often via small droplets released during coughing, sneezing, or talking. These droplets usually fall to the ground rather than traveling long distances through the air. Transmission can also occur through smaller particles known as aerosols that remain suspended in the air for longer periods of time. This type of transmission may occur during medical procedures and in crowded indoor spaces with inadequate ventilation. In some cases, individuals may become infected by touching a contaminated surface and then touching their face. People are most contagious within the first three days following symptom onset; however, they can still spread the virus before symptoms appear and even when showing no signs of illness. The standard method of diagnosis involves real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (rRT-PCR) from a nasopharyngeal swab. Chest CT imaging may also be used in cases where there is a high suspicion of infection based on symptoms and risk factors. To prevent the spread of COVID-19, health officials recommend frequent hand washing, maintaining physical distance from others, quarantine for those with symptoms, covering coughs, and avoiding touching unwashed hands to one's face. The use of cloth face coverings has been recommended in public settings to minimize transmission risks, while medical-grade masks should only be used by healthcare workers and those who directly care for infected individuals. Currently, there are no vaccines or specific antiviral treatments available for COVID-19. Management involves treating symptoms, providing supportive care, isolation, and experimental measures. The World Health Organization declared the COVID-19 outbreak a public health emergency of international concern on January 30th, 2020, and a pandemic on March 11th, 2020. Local transmission has been reported in most countries across all six WHO regions.
