Albert Pommier was born in Paris on January 11th, 1880, and died in the city of his birth in 1943. As a French sculptor, he made significant contributions to the world of art. Born in Paris in 1880, Pommier pursued his artistic education at the École des Beaux Arts, where he studied under the renowned Barrias. From 1905 onward, he was a regular exhibitor at the prestigious Salon des Artistes français, and in 1914, he won a prize that allowed him to travel to Algeria to study at the Villa Abd-el-Tif. However, his mobilization during World War I prevented him from taking full advantage of this opportunity until 1919. As a stretcher bearer in the 3rd battalion of the 11th Infantry Regiment, Pommier served his country with distinction during the war. The Villa Abd-el-Tif, where he studied, was an esteemed institution that provided French artists with the chance to explore Islamic art in Algeria. By winning the prestigious Abd-el-Tif prize, modelled on the renowned Prix de Rome, young artists like Pommier were awarded a grant that allowed them to spend one or two years in Algiers, free from financial worries. Pommier's artistic prowess was further recognized when he won the grand prix at the 1937 International Exposition. Today, his legacy lives on as an iconic figure in the world of French art.
