Full descriptionFor rendering need VRay all texture and map includedOn March 11, 2011 a devastating earthquake measuring 9.0 on the moment magnitude scale struck Japan at 14:46 JST off its northeast coast. Reactors 4, 5, and 6 had been temporarily shut down for scheduled maintenance before the disaster hit. The remaining reactors automatically shut down after the quake, but the subsequent tsunami surged through the plant, disabling critical generators that kept pumps running to cool and control the reactors. Isolated by flooding and earthquake damage, rescue teams were unable to reach the site. In the following days, partial nuclear meltdowns occurred in reactors 1, 2, and 3; hydrogen blasts destroyed the upper cladding of reactors 1 and 3's buildings; a blast damaged reactor 2's containment vessel; and severe fires raged at reactor 4.The Japanese authorities classified the incidents at reactors 1, 2, and 3 as a level 5 accident with wider implications on the International Nuclear Event Scale, while the events at reactor 4 were rated a level 3 serious incident.
