The Shelf of Efficiency: How to Hold 12 NUCs in Just 3 Rack Units. ### Real-World Testing Over two years of rigorous testing have proven the efficacy of this shelf, supporting three rows of 96 NUCs in an HPC cluster configuration and grid computing setup without a single outage. This is no ordinary solution – it's a testament to innovation and efficiency. ### High-Density Computing Imagine being able to pack 96-120 servers into a mere 42U space, all thanks to the compact design of these shelves. Each shelf holds six line-cards that can be easily slid in or out without disrupting operation, making maintenance a breeze. This is what we mean by high-density computing. ### NUC Setup Setting up each NUC involves removing the internal fan and replacing it with a standard desktop fan. Next, screw the board and disk holder onto the line-card – an easy task that reuses screws from the original NUC case. The result? A seamless integration of the new components into the shelf's efficient design. ### Shelf Assembly Assembling the shelves themselves is straightforward: glue the front and back parts to the large lowered sheet, then add the top plate, left/right plates, and fan holder part. Secure everything with desktop screws for a sturdy build that won't compromise on efficiency. ### Power Distribution The power cable features a crimped Molex Micro-Fit 3.0 connector on one end (for NUC internal connection), fixed in place by the line-card cable holders. This allows for easy sliding of line-cards during production without shutting down operations. The cables can be soldered onto a simple 0.75mm power cable and attached to the PSU via U-shape terminal connectors. ### PSU Installation The PSU is held on the back of the 19 rack using an example design provided in the psu.scad file, which fits the Tracopower PSU perfectly. Two identical pieces are screwed onto the PSU and inserted into a simple 19" 1U front plate installed at the rear of the 19" rack. A third piece serves as a holder for power cables leading to the shelf. ### Ecological Footprint NUCs are designed with sustainability in mind – they use fewer components than server boards and consume less power. This shelf is built with minimal transport footprint, using ultra-light manufacturing methods that ensure parts can be fully recycled into new filament and servers. When a motherboard is upgraded or replaced, it can return to its Intel box for a second life as a desktop or HTPC. ### To Purchase * NUCs (e.g., NUC5i5MYHE with vPro for remote console) * Fans (92x92x25mm, e.g., SUNON MagLev Motor Fan ME92252V2-0000-A99) * PSU (12-24 Vdc with enough power; e.g., Tracopower TXH 600-124) * Nuc internal power connector 2x2 and pins (Molex Micro-Fit 3.0: 43030-0007, 43025-0400) * Electric cable (e.g., Alphawire 5012C SL005) * Crimping tool The Shelf of Efficiency is not just a solution; it's a declaration of innovative spirit and commitment to sustainability. It's the future of computing – compact, efficient, and eco-friendly.
