The first time I printed this file, there was a hole in the side due to a glitch in the STL file with the splines. I fixed it, and although it looks weird, this STL prints perfectly. Well, this was quite a design to modify. I have participated in every challenge since I joined Thingiverse, and I didn't want this one to be any different. I chose to modify the NRG Energy (San Diego) Server Cabinet Blanking Panels for two reasons. Firstly, this design is really detailed and impressive. I didn't actually know what NRG Energy was when I first looked at this design, so I visited NRG's Twitter page, which confirmed that they are a great company whose philosophy-as well as architecture- should be preserved on Thingiverse forever. Print Settings Printer Brand: MakerBot Printer: MakerBot Replicator 2 Rafts: Yes Supports: Yes Resolution: 1mm (High) Infill: 10-15% Notes: This print took me 11 hours, and I did it at 50% scale. In other words, it is probably best to print it overnight. Post-Printing Safety announcements Even though I called this a mug, I would very strongly advise against drinking hot liquids out of it. Although PLA is safe to drink out of, it will soften and release plastics into your hot beverage. If you somehow beg SpaceX or someone to print it out of metal, I am very jealous. Please send me a pic and feel free to drink whatever you want out of it. How I Designed This Design Process Initially, this design started out as Marciot's design. I was really impressed by the detail and complexities he managed to fit onto his NRG Design. Marciot then modified it and remixed it into various panels. When making this design into a mug, I faced several issues. Mainly, there is no good way to draw on the side of a circle in CAD. To create the circular face of a mug, I created a 50-sided polygon (basically a circle, but with sides that CAD allows you to easily create sketches on). I wrapped the first panel from http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:943239 around the sides of the polygon, and came up with half a mug. I didn't want half a mug. I wanted a full mug. So I mirrored the design, and ended up with a full mug. All I had to do was add the handle and print it. Custom Section Please add Onshape. I'm sorry to complain, but I really really REALLY wish that Thingiverse would add OnShape under the design tools used button. OnShape is awesome, and allows me to do almost everything I could do in Autodesk Inventor online.
