The human body contains approximately 60 trillion cells, each one performing a specific function to keep us alive and healthy. These tiny cells are the building blocks of our entire being, working together seamlessly like a well-oiled machine. Cells come in three main types: prokaryotic, eukaryotic, and archaeal. Prokaryotic cells lack a true nucleus and other membrane-bound organelles, whereas eukaryotic cells have a nucleus surrounded by a double membrane. Archaeal cells share some characteristics with both prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Within each cell, there are various organelles that perform different functions. The mitochondria produce energy for the cell through cellular respiration, while the ribosomes synthesize proteins using genetic information from DNA. The endoplasmic reticulum helps transport materials within the cell, and the lysosomes digest and recycle cellular waste. In addition to these specialized organelles, cells also contain other essential components like the cytoplasm, which is the jelly-like substance surrounding the nucleus, and the plasma membrane, which regulates what enters and leaves the cell.
