In our 3D design class at CCCKC Hackerspace, we created salt shakers from scratch using just a cube primitive. Students downloaded construction files for their own creation in Hexagon 2.5 - Polygon Modeler offered on Daz3d site. The shaker consists of two parts: the base, constructed in about five steps, and the top, made in roughly three steps by duplicating the bottom half and fitting it with a lip. The class also covered Hexagon interface, 3D construction techniques for printable objects, and designing considering printer resolution and final product.
