I built this thing for work, where a rat is supposed to poke its nose into the hole and break an IR beam coming from these SparkFun sensors (https://www.sparkfun.com/products/241). The sensors fit neatly in slots on the sides. There's also a hole at the top for a 3mm LED. The other part is designed for when the rat is supposed to be sleeping. It fits into a slot in this Lafayette Neuroscience chamber (https://www.lafayetteneuroscience.com/product_detail.asp?itemid=868), and then spins 35° to lock it into place.
