Originating from the development of the Northrop F-5-G Tiger, the F-20-A Tigershark emerged with enhanced performance due to a larger single engine. The F-20 began as a private investor initiative aiming to sell an advanced lightweight fighter to foreign allies without compromising the advanced avionics of more sophisticated fighters like the F-15 and F-16. To prevent falling into Soviet hands, it was sold to overseas allies; however, the project was eventually cancelled in 1986 after limited success. Some were purchased by the US Air Force and others by National Guard units.
