Northern Saw-whet Owl

The Northern Saw-whet Owl (Aegolius acadicus) is one of our smallest owl species. It inhabits forested regions in the province where it's relatively common, but you'll rarely catch a glimpse of this nocturnal bird due to its secretive habits. By day, it quietly roosts amidst dense conifers, only to be revealed by other birds who will then unleash a chorus of mobbing calls to try and dislodge the predator from their midst. Sometimes, with a nest box installed, you can entice a pair of saw-whets to stay in the neighbourhood for an extended period. However, small mammals like deer mice should exercise caution, as they are the owl's primary prey.
