Another old mock up of the advanced version of the X-15, the X-15 A-2. The fuselage was extended 29 inches, and two external tanks were added. With this new configuration it was considered possible to achieve Mach 8. One of the major programs associated with the X-15A-2 was testing a supersonic combustion ramjet, or more simply, a scramjet. It was to be mounted to the bottom ventral.
