The North American Aviation P-51 Mustang, a long-range single-seat World War II fighter aircraft, was designed, built, and made its first flight in just 117 days. Initially serving as a fighter-bomber and reconnaissance aircraft for the RAF, it was later converted to a bomber escort, playing a significant role in raids over Germany from early 1944. Used by Allied forces in Europe during World War II, it also saw limited action against the Japanese in the Pacific War. The Mustang began the Korean War as the primary fighter for the United Nations but was eventually relegated to ground attack duties upon being surpassed by jet fighters early in the conflict. Remarkably, this iconic aircraft remained in service with several air forces until the early 1980s.
