Initially flown by the RAF as a fighter-bomber and reconnaissance plane, it later became a bomber escort during raids over Germany, contributing to Allied air superiority from early 1944. The P-51 served with Allied forces in Europe and saw limited action against Japan in the Pacific War. It began the Korean War as the primary UN fighter but was relegated to ground attack duties upon being surpassed by jet fighters. Despite this, it continued serving some air forces until the early 1980s.
