The North American Aviation P-51 Mustang is a long-range single-seat fighter aircraft that saw action during World War II. Designed, built, and airborne in just 117 days, this iconic plane first flew with the RAF as a fighter-bomber and reconnaissance aircraft before being converted into a bomber escort. From early 1944 onwards, it played a crucial role in raids over Germany, helping to ensure Allied air superiority. The P-51 was used by various Allied forces in Europe and even saw limited action against the Japanese in the Pacific War. At the start of the Korean War, it served as the main fighter for the United Nations but transitioned into a ground attack role when jet fighters took precedence. Despite this, the Mustang remained in service with certain air forces until the early 1980s.
