History The North American Aviation P-51 Mustang was a fast and highly maneuverable single-seat fighter aircraft used during World War II. Designed in just 117 days, the Mustang first flew as a Royal Air Force fighter-bomber before being converted to a bomber escort, employed in raids over Germany. The P-51 played a crucial role in ensuring Allied air superiority from early 1944. The P-51 saw service with Allied air forces in Europe and limited action against Japan in the Pacific War. It began the Korean War as the main fighter for the United Nations but was later relegated to ground attack missions when superseded by jet fighters. The Mustang remained in service until the early 1980s, known for its speed, durability, and economy. The P-51D model features a Packard V-1650 engine, a two-stage supercharged version of the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, and six .50 caliber M2 Browning machine guns. After World War II and the Korean War, many Mustangs were converted for civilian use, particularly air racing. The Mustang's reputation led Ford Motor Company Designer John Najjar to propose the name for a new youth-oriented coupe automobile in the mid-1960s.
