The North American Aviation P-51 Mustang is a long-range single-seat fighter aircraft that was designed, built, and flew within just 117 days during World War II. Initially serving as a fighter-bomber and reconnaissance plane for the RAF, it later transitioned to a bomber escort role in raids over Germany, contributing significantly to Allied air superiority from 1944 onwards. The P-51 saw service not only with European Allied forces but also had limited involvement in the Pacific War against Japan. At the start of the Korean War, it was the main fighter for the United Nations, though its role changed to ground attack following the advent of jet fighters early in the conflict. Despite this, the Mustang remained in use with certain air forces until the early 1980s.
