NOMOON is a 3D-printed parametric spherical speaker generator that was created using OpenSCAD software. For a demonstration of NOMOON's capabilities, please view the following video: http://youtu.be/UFUMgY15UOw Additional information about working with NOMOON can be found on this blog post: http://nothinglabs.blogspot.com/2014/12/project-nomoon-parametric-spherical.html NOMOON is based on a previous OpenSCAD speaker generator called Speakergen, which can be viewed at this URL: http://nothinglabs.blogspot.com/2014/09/speakergen-parametric-3d-printed.html NOMOON allows users to create custom spherical speaker enclosures with adjustable volume and customizable design parameters. This includes wall thickness, bass port dimensions, number of screw holes, and other details. The software also generates a companion speaker stand for added convenience. However, some speakers tend to rotate forward in the stands due to their weight. A simple solution is to apply a rubber band around the sphere to prevent this movement. The following instructions guide users through the process: Instructions Selecting the Right Speaker Driver The optimal enclosure and port size can be determined using various online tools. For instance, this link provides an easy-to-use tool: http://www.micka.de/org/en/index.php#ideal. It's recommended to consult with expert forums or professionals in acoustics before finalizing any speaker designs. Printing Tips It's highly advised to use a raft when printing this model to ensure proper support and stability. The reason behind this might not be immediately clear: without a raft, printing a sphere without supports is indeed challenging due to its unique curvature. NOMOON solves this issue by adding a flat disk on the bottom of the sphere if no bass port is chosen - which often proves handy for making the sphere printable even when using 3D printers with layer heights exceeding standard limits. Printing the speaker may also result in noticeable defects such as 'curling', visible on the lower parts. An enclosed or heated print chamber can mitigate this issue somewhat but ultimately the effects of curling can only be completely avoided by opting for a highly sophisticated, state-of-the-art printer that includes heating functions. When 3D printing my own speakers using PLA at an increased resolution of 200 micron with silver filaments, and choosing three shell models with an infill of 10%, I've observed they have impressive quality but more demanding listeners may desire to augment these settings to obtain an even greater listening experience. One additional improvement that significantly enhances audio is using polyfill in place of standard paper filler in the speaker compartment. Design Tips The process of inserting speakers into mounts occasionally reveals that small openings can end up being less than specified in drawings. For many speakers, you may also need slightly bigger screw holes to ensure easy setup, whereas for optimal convenience, consider enlarging mounting hole dimensions instead. Additionally, speakers might sometimes encounter space limitations where speaker wire becomes inaccessible. You have several design parameters within NOMOON that are adjustable including makeTerminalNotch - a feature especially useful when your drivers are larger or come with terminal connectors obstructing your standard openings - you could always go in for a 'file and dremel' job, an easy yet very reliable choice! Design also gives speakers two wire hole placements, top side one & another smaller hole located rear-side within the speaker. Typically after 3d printing both need to be drilled out because standard paper fills tend to hinder space required by larger thicker drivers or wires to prevent forward rotation - a trick is then found and solved via either an additional rubber strip on each corner for balancing heavier speaker weight at the front & back
