Nok is a town located on the Jos Plateau in Central Nigeria where the first fragments of terracotta sculptures were unearthed in 1928. Researchers have used radiocarbon and thermoluminescence dating methods to determine that these sculptures were created between 600 BC and AD 250. The discovery of terracottas associated with stone and iron objects has led experts to classify the Nok civilization as the oldest Iron Age culture in sub-Saharan Africa. For more information on Nok art, see "Nok: African Sculpture in Archaeological Context," a book edited by Prof. Dr. Peter Breunig and published by Goethe-Universität Frankfurt, Germany in 2014.
