Nitro Engine Active Cooling Shroud
prusaprinters

I'm currently working on a project I've dubbed µGen, to see if I can make a useful miniature generator out of a nitro RC car engine I bought online.

However, because the engine will be sitting still instead of flying through the air or along the ground, overheating quickly became a problem.

But I couldn't find anything online to provide cooling whilst the engine was stationary.

Fortunately, this is PRECISELY the situation that I bought a 3D printer for.

I got brainstorming in Tinkercad and eventually came up with the idea of a clip-on shroud to hold a couple of spare cooling fans I had lying around from another part of the project.

The rest is basically history.

Print Settings

Printer Brand:

Creality

Printer:

Ender 3

Rafts:

Doesn't Matter

Supports:

Yes

Resolution:

0.2MM

Infill:

60%

Filament: Overture PETG Clear

Notes:

Because this is literally mounted to an engine, it's pretty much required to print this in a heat-resistant filament, and fully test the engine to its limits under close supervision to ensure the shroud will not melt or burn.
It's recommended to only enable supports for the overhanging fan mount. You can do this in Cura by selecting Support Placement>Touching Build Plate.
I've discovered in my PLA test prints that I can just about scrape by without supports in the holes for the fans, and that if I DO use supports there, I end up breaking the thin walls before I remove the supports.

I've also included a "Generic" logo-free version in case you want to emboss your own text or logo into the side. It would be appreciated if you posted a Make or gave me credit, though.

This design is optimized for the SH Engines PT-21-P3, available at this non-affiliate link: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B081Q94JS3

However, it should still clip on to any engine with a round heatsink that has a diameter of no less than 55mm at any point, and a height of no less than 40mm.

It fits two high-speed 30mm fans. You'll typically find high-speed, high-flow 30mm fans by looking for "RC Cooling Fan".

And, for the record, the project's name is pronounced "Mugen" or "Microgen".

Category: R/C Vehicles
