Nitra Castle, a Slovak treasure, towers over the Old Town of Nitra in Slovakia, dominating the city and proudly standing as a national cultural monument. The seat of the Diocese of Nitra, this castle boasts a rich history that spans thousands of years. The first fortified settlement on Castle Hill dates back to the Bronze Age, around 1,600 BCE. The Celts arrived in the 1st century BCE and called it home for a while before abandoning it after destruction. It remained vacant until the early Slavic period, when the site was settled again between the 7th and 8th centuries. By the 9th century, the Slavs had established a wooden palisade on top of the hill to safeguard their newfound settlement. This early defensive system stood firm for some time before being surpassed by an even more impressive rampart constructed from two outer drystone walls with a robust internal timber structure, all secured in place with earth and weighing around 3m thick. Unfortunately, this fortification did not survive beyond the start of the 11th century. The actual castle on which Nitra stands today was built during the 11th century. The St. Emmeram's Cathedral forms the heart of the complex, combining elements such as the Bishop's residence and a series of separate buildings, all connected seamlessly to each other. As one of its earliest components still surviving from that time, the Romanesque Church of St. Emmeram takes pride in being over 900 years old, boasting walls crafted during this century. Not far from there lies the Upper Church of St. Emmeram built originally during the 14th century. Additionally to this part and the oldest Romanesque piece are two additional architectural additions – the first is a beautiful Gothic church dated to be in the early times of that period and, after numerous refurbishments which turned the Bishop's Palace Late Baroque during late half of eighteenth, both mentioned buildings above can stand up proudly today in its renewed shape from the early fourteenth and at least one smaller bit which made out these castle structures also came through a massive re-building in mid fifteenth centuries onwards still seen nowadays as many people walk past here everyday.
