Nissan Cube Interior Mirror Brace
thingiverse
A few years ago, in the dead of winter, my Nissan Cube's interior rearview mirror suddenly breaks into two pieces. I head online to see what options are available (as it bolts onto the roof rather than sticking to the windshield) and discover this is a known issue with dealerships charging upwards of 90USD just for the replacement mirror. I exclaim, "Nuts to that!" and purchase a generic suction cup mirror from Amazon. That suffices temporarily until a few weeks later when it refuses to stick anymore. My roommate demands a proper replacement, so I reluctantly search again for one on eBay. To my surprise, secondhand interior mirrors are available for about 30USD. I order one and find out that my original mirror had actually broken in two places. Remember how I mentioned earlier that the mirror bolts into the roof instead of sticking to the windshield? Well, it actually bolts onto a plastic piece that's bolted into the roof of the car. I call this piece of crap because its central hole is suspended on a web of thinner bits of plastic. These thin pieces are meant for accommodating wires in more souped-up or decked out versions of the car (back-up cameras, dash-cams, etc.). However, it's part of the known issue with broken mirrors. If you look up many used mirrors on eBay, quite a number still have that middle circle attached to them. I visit Amazon once again and find a replacement piece for about 13USD. "Nuts to that!" is uttered once more as I decide to make my own instead. In fact, I create two just in case the little groove between two of the mounting holes is meant for something else. I've posted two versions of the code below. One final and important note: I lose the original bolt that held my mirror in place, and whatever kind of screw it's supposed to be remains a trade secret because I couldn't find any intel on it. A 10-32 screw works just fine for me, but you may or may not have access to such a specific fastener (which is another word for screws). I've commented the section of code that pertains to it, so please find whatever works best for you. As for the three mounting holes, they're specifically designed for the bolts that hold it to the roof of the car, so if you don't have those, I'm afraid I'm not much help either.
