This ancient palace entrance is a remnant of Nimrud's grandeur, which was ravaged in 2016. A wooden board attached to the wall bears an inscription that reveals: "The North-Western Palace - This majestic structure was commissioned by Assyrian King Assurnassirpal II, who ruled from 883 to 859 B.C. Spanning a vast area of 200 by 130 meters, it boasts two grand entrances adorned with intricate carvings of mythical creatures designed to ward off evil spirits. These hybrid beings, crafted from human heads and lion or bull bodies with eagle or hawk wings, evoke fear in those who dare approach the palace. Their features are meant to intimidate enemies and strangers alike. The sculptures also represent the unparalleled strength that defined the Assyrians, a people who dominated both land and sea, harnessing their power to achieve their goals. The facade of the external wall features alabaster slabs with bas-reliefs depicting foreign dignitaries, mostly captives shackled and bearing gifts for the king."
